Dollar Tree Holds Grand Opening
Mayor Staffieri was joined by city and state officials as he cut the ribbon for the opening of the new Dollar Tree store in the Lowe's Plaza. Derby's newest retail store is actually not that new. On Saturday, Feb. 7, Mayor Staffieri was joined by city and state officials in cutting a red ribbon to open the new Dollar Tree store. Dollar Tree was actually in the earlier K-Mart Plaza which was demolished to make way for the new Lowe's Plaza. Dollar Tree stores are the largest discount variety store. The new Derby store has 8,000 feet of retail space. They employ 17 people. Dollar tree stores continue to thrive in a difficult economy with 3,500 stores in 48 states. They recently posted a 6.8% increase in fourth quarter earnings. Mayor Staffieri said, "I am proud to be part of yet another exciting retail development here in Derby. We look forward to partnering with this successful retail chain and welcome them to Derby and the surrounding communities. In today's financial climate, Dollar Tree stores make good economic sense.
