Refuse & Recycling Transfer and Composting Facility

Located on Pine Street is closed! The City of Shelton will now be accepting items from Derby residents, click here for the news release, item list and fee schedule.

Derby residents will have to visit the Town Clerks office in Derby City Hall (lower level) to pay for any items which will need to be disposed of at the Shelton Landfill and require payment (see the release link above). Once they pay for the item, they will receive a receipt which can then be brought to Shelton's landfill, along with the items to be disposed of. If the items in question are not on the Derby receipt, and they do require payment to dispose of, they will not be accepted in Shelton. These items include tires, refrigerators, demolition material, AC units, TV's, etc. There will be no charge for regular household garbage, cardboard, etc.

Derby residents shall prepay for disposal at the Derby City Hall and present a paid receipt to be allowed to deliver any chargeable item to the Shelton Transfer Station and will be required to show proof of residency.

The fee schedule is the same as it was at the Derby Transfer Station for the past 20 years, except the cost to dump demolition material at the Shelton Landfill is considerably less. Only cash will be accepted in the Derby Town Clerks office. Brush and leaves will be accepted at the Derby Public Works Garage. Tree stumps will not be accepted.

The City of Derby provides sanitation services including weekly curbside refuse and recycling pickups, residential brush pickups, residential leaf pickup (must be placed in biodegradable bags) and Christmas Tree pickups. The city does bulk pickup from May until the end of October by appointment only on Tuesday's. The residents must call the City Garage at 203-736-1468 to make an appointment. "Only scheduled appointments will be picked up" so residents must call. If not, they will be cited for illegal dumping.

Brush and leaves: residents must call the Public Works Garage to have their brush and bags of leaves (in bio degradable bags) picked up in front of their houses. Derby Public Works will collect leaves in recycling bags only. Bags with ANYTHING other than leaves will not be taken. Brush should be cut into 4 to 5 foot lengths, and tied together (if possible) and left neatly by the curb. Brush and leaves cannot be brought to the Public Works Complex. We are not permitted to accept them there. They must be picked up in front of their houses. Please call the Public Works Complex before placing items at the curb, to schedule an appointment and receive procedure requirements. Procedure Violators may be subject to fines and fees.

Oversize Solid Waste Pickup

Any owner or occupant desiring collection of oversize solid waste (i.e. old furniture, appliances without freon and scrap metal) shall schedule an oversize solid waste pickup through the City of Derby department of Public Works. Collection of oversize solid waste will be provided according to the following fee schedule:
